How Velociraptor Was Discovered

Of all the dinosaurs that have been discovered over the last 200 years, Velociraptor comes closest to the romantic ideal of rugged paleontologists trekking across dangerous, windswept terrain in search of ancient fossils. Ironically, though, this dinosaur was nowhere near as smart and vicious as it has subsequently been depicted in movies, the main culprit being Jurassic Parks pack-hunting, quick-thinking, doorknob-turning Velociraptors (which were actually played by individuals of the closely related raptor genus Deinonychus, and even then not all that accurately). The Velociraptors of the Gobi Desert In the early 1920s, Mongolia (located in central Asia) was one of the most remote places on the face of the earth, inaccessible by train, plane, or pretty much anything else except a well-stocked caravan of well-oiled automobiles and sturdy horses. That is exactly what New Yorks American Museum of Natural History dispatched to outer Mongolia, by way of western China, in a series of fossil-hunting expeditions led by the famous paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews. Although Andrews personally discovered and named many Mongolian dinosaurs in the early 1920s—including Oviraptor and Protoceratops—the honor of unearthing Velociraptor went to one of his associates, Peter Kaisen, who stumbled upon a crushed skull and toe claw at a dig site in the Gobi Desert. Unfortunately for Kaisen, the honor of naming Velociraptor didnt go to him, or even to Andrews, but to Henry Fairfield Osborn, the president of the American Museum of Natural History (who, after all, wrote all the checks). Osborn referred to this dinosaur as Ovoraptor in a popular magazine article; fortunately for generations of schoolkids (can you imagine having to distinguish between Ovoraptor and Oviraptor?) he settled on Velociraptor mongoliensis (speedy thief from Mongolia) for his scientific paper. Velociraptor Behind the Iron Curtain It was difficult enough to send an American expedition to the Gobi Desert in the early 1920s; that became a political impossibility only a few years later, as the Mongolian government was toppled by a Communist revolution and the Soviet Union exerted its hegemony over Mongolian science. (The Peoples Republic of China didnt come into existence until 1949, giving the USSR a crucial head start in a Mongolian nation that, today, is dominated by China rather than Russia.) The upshot was that, for over 50 years, the American Museum of Natural History was excluded from any further Velociraptor-hunting expeditions. After World War II, Mongolian scientists, aided by colleagues from the USSR and Poland, returned repeatedly to the Flaming Cliffs fossil site where the original Velociraptor specimens had been unearthed. The most famous discovery—of a near-complete Velociraptor caught in the act of grappling with an equally well-preserved Protoceratops—was announced in 1971. In the late 1980s, following the crumbling of the Soviet Union and its satellites, western scientists were again able to travel in Mongolia. This was when a joint Chinese and Canadian team discovered Velociraptor specimens in northern China, and a joint Mongolian and American team unearthed additional Velociraptors at the Flaming Cliffs site. (One of the specimens discovered on this latter expedition was informally named Ichabodcraniosaurus, after Nathaniel Hawthornes headless horseman because it was missing its skull.) Later, in 2007, paleontologists discovered a Velociraptor forearm bearing the unmistakable imprint of quills—the first definite proof that (as had long been suspected) Velociraptor sported feathers rather than reptilian scales. The Feathered Theropods of Central Asia As famous as it is, Velociraptor was far from the only feathered, meat-eating dinosaur of late Cretaceous central Asia. The ground was thick with dino-birds closely related to the North American Troodon, including Saurornithoides, Linhevenator, Byronosaurus, and the wonderfully named Zanabazar; feathered dinosaurs closely related to Oviraptor, including Heyuannia, Citipati, Conchoraptor, and the (also) wonderfully named Khaan; and a vast assortment of associated raptors. Most of these dinosaurs were discovered in the late 20th century, under the auspices of a talented generation of Chinese paleontologists. What was it about the windswept Mongolian plains that favored this brand of dinosaur diversity? Clearly, conditions in late Cretaceous central Asia  favored small, skittery animals that could nimbly pursue smaller prey or speedily escape from the clutches of slightly bigger dino-birds. In fact, the profusion of central Asian feathered dinosaurs points to the most likely explanation for the evolution of flight: originally evolved for the purposes of insulation and display, feathers gave dinosaurs a certain amount of lift while they were running, and were thus increasingly favored by natural selection until one lucky reptile achieved actual lift-off!

Seven million of the twenty-six million do not even know they have diabetes. Diabetes is a treatable disease and can be controlled in most cases. Many items that can complicate diabetes include: kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, blindness, neuropathy, and blindness. Chances of having diabetes are increased by a set of genes. The two kinds of diabetes that are commonly known are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is mostly diagnosed in kids and is also called juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces small amounts of insulin and sometimes produces no insulin at all. Insulin is a hormone that controls the movement of sugar into cells. Type 2 diabetes is the most familiar type of diabetes and is also called adult-onset diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, your body rejects insulin or doesn’t produce enough and cannot use it properly. Diabetics whose bodies need insulin, mostly type 1 diabetics, can inject by syringe. Other methods of supplying your body with insulin are insulin pens and pumps. Three genes that increase your chances of type 1 diabetes are the HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1 genes. Actuar Conjugation in Spanish, Translation and Examples

Actuar is a common Spanish verb that means to act in most senses of the English verb, such as to take an action, to behave, and to perform a role. It can be used in a wide variety of contexts. Actuar Conjugation Actuar is conjugated the same way as other -ar verbs,  but with a twist: When a regular conjugation of actuar would end up putting the accent on the first syllable, the u gets an accent mark to shift the accent to the second syllable. Guess whos coming to dinner - 2087 Words

Equality for All Stanley Kramer’s film, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, is about an interracial marriage between a black man and a white woman as well as the generational divide between the alarmed parents of both races and the optimistic young couple. There are aspects of the film that can be construed as progressive and influential for the era, the film more accurately serves as a reflection of the larger socio-political context of 1960’s America in regards to both attitudes of antagonism and acceptance of interracial marriage. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner addressed a forbidden subject during the pinnacle of cultural changes in America. The film was not as progressive as it potentially could have been since it avoided serious confrontations with racism while maintaining elements of white dominance in order to attract white audiences. Other Christian anti-New Age works include Douglas Groothuis’ three-part series beginning with Unmasking the New Age (1986) and Walter Martin’s The New Age Cult (1989) (Kemp:135). Innocuous ‘New Age music’ is also condemned for encouraging people to reflect on religion and culture that is not explicitly Christian. John Newport, for example, insists that it is ‘†¦satanically inspired†¦ [and thus] theologically wrong in its roots and in the effects it hopes to achieve’ (Partridge: 255). The mainstream churches have tended to be less overtly hostile in their official responses to New Age than some of the smaller the innovative approach to spirituality. Some New Age movements foster a mystical approach. It can fit within the category of non religious spiritualities, and for some adherents it is like an alternative to religion. For others, New Age practices harmonize with their religious beliefs (Wilber: 348). The New Age is particularly concerned with lifestyle and health. It means a range of human needs from immediate wellbeing to a sense of connectedness with others and the world, and to meaning in life. It also has a commercial dimension catering to consumer spirituality; some practices at the market end of the New Age can be regarded as part of the self-help industry (Tucker: 350). The literature on New Age highlights diversity and spirituality. While beyond our scope here, an appraisal of the spiritual scope of New Age remains an important part of any critical exploration of the contemporary spirituality that affects young people (Kemp: 134). The New Age is mainly an adult and young adult interest. Nevertheless, adolescents and children will be inquisitive about it when they encounter it in the culture. They may well try some practices as part of their experimentation in identity and spirituality. What is likely to appeal to young people is the fluid and non-institutional appearance of the New Age; it does not prescribe beliefs but is based on individuals piecing together their own spirituality to suit their needs and interests. This is a clinical term used to describe the way an animal is lied down laterally in a proper way to make the animal feel good and comfortable. The cat was placed flat on the table before the towel wrapping technique was done on the cat. In the video, the cat was not placed properly in a lateral position that made the cat struggle a nd breaks free. Another criterion that was not fulfilled was the handler was in danger. If the lateral recumbency had maintained, then the handler would have been safe. For providing safety to the handler, forearm should have been placed with minimum or low pressure against the side of the cat that prevents biting and handler would have been safe (Boon, 2017). However, in the video, the handler placed the index finger properly in between the forelegs of the cat that showed proper handling to some extent. The towel wrapping demonstrated in the video was also not proper. The shoulder blade was not properly placed with the arms that suggested there was no proper stability while handling. If there had been properly towel wrapping with proper use of arms, there would have been better stability and control over the cat. This suggested that the cats movements were not controlled properly in all directions. The correct technique in towel wrapping is to place the cat over the towel and wrap it like a scarf. In this method, tug one end of the towel over the body of the cat and sink it with the other end of the towel. The handler in the video does not follow this correct technique. Moreover, after towel wrapping, only the eye, ear ad mouth of the cat should be exposed, however, in the video, the handler did not cover the cat properly and body parts were exposed that suggests wrapping was not proper. Therefore, from the above discussion, it can be concluded that the handling and controlling of cat was not proper in the video by the handler. Although, one hand was on the patient all the times, the lifting of the cat was not proper. The index finger was properly placed between the forelegs, although, there was no control of movements in all directions.
